This is going to be the last journal of mine that you will ever read. I am sure that makes you extremely sad because I am your favorite and my journals are always super interesting. It is okay though Mrs.Walters. Like you said, all good things must come to an end. Don’t cry though, l’ll visit! J Anyways, this past year has had its ups and downs but I have always looked forward to coming to this class every day. I feel like I have learned so much and my writing skills have improved immensely. There are things that I have struggled with all my life as I wrote papers in the past but taking this class has taught me how to write a well-developed thesis sentence and from really great opening and closing paragraphs. If I could change anything, I would change my first two papers and focus on MLA format a lot more. Now that I am used to it, it is very easy to me and I feel like I could easily write a paper and get all of those little details right. I’m very glad that I took this class because now when I go to college, I will be prepared. When I wrote all of my papers, I always put a lot of pressure on myself to write a really good thesis sentence and made sure I never drifted away from it because then my paper would be very off topic. In my opinion, it is what has helped me get the grades that I have gotten in the past. It is a good strategy and I will always stick with it. This journal is probably the most boring journal I have ever written. I’m sorry that you have had to read it. Hunter, Teigen, Mac and I are the only ones left. I have no idea why this journal is taking so long. Maybe it is because they wont stop talking to me and you and mac just called me massively fat! L Second mean thing you’ve said this month. Okay well I have written way past the limit so I’m going to see you later. I love you Mrs.Walters!

Five years from now, I will be graduated from college after majoring in kinesiology. I will have gotten into Physical Therapy school. Hopefully I will have made a lot of friends at LSU and many of them are going to the same school as I am. I don’t think I will be married because 23 may be a little too young. I hope that I will not have a brain aneurism after being at LSU for 4 years. It is supposed to be a tough school but I think I will make it through it. I do not exactly know where I will be in 5 years. Sorry. Not a very interesting journal. Hope I’m still your favorite!
Demetrius-I don’t love you! Leave me alone!
Helena-I am just so attracted to you! Demetrius-I am not asking you to follow me! I don’t love you! Helena-That makes me love you even more! It would be an honor to be with you. Demetrius-I hate looking at you. Helena-But I love looking at you. Demetrius-It would be crazy for you to leave and risk everything for someone that doesn’t love you back. Standing alone in a deserted area is a bad way to protect your virginity. Helena-You are my world and standing in a deserted area in the middle of the night does not scare me. My whole world would be there watching me so I wouldn’t truly be alone. Demetrius-I would not protect you from anything. I would run away! Helena-Do whatever you want. There is no animal that is as cruel as you. The story of Daphne and Apollo will be changed. Demetrius-I don’t want to listen to you anymore. I’m leaving and don’t follow me. I will do something bad to you. Helena-You already hurt me in the town. Your behavior is rude! Men should be the ones fighting for us, not the other way around. I wouldn’t mind being killed by someone I love so much. In the scholarly journal "Hawthorne's 'The Birthmark': Science and Romance as Belief" by Barbara Eckstein, she talks about the ideologies of science and romance. She writes that when Robert B. Heilman wrote a journal similiar to this one, he said that, "Aylmer being a tragic overreacher who looks to science for an ultimate account of reality." This is a significant interpretation of the stories most important text. Science is Georgiana’s religion just as much as it is Aylmer’s religion. It is stated that, “romance contributes to the metaphysical excess of science just as science contributes to the metaphysical excess of romance.” When the two of these ideas are put together, they define “the two ideologies define the distribution of work in the story.” The work is performed by Georgiana, Alymer and Aminadab.
The author of “The Birthmark” by Nathaniel Hawthorne, writes about the dangers of science but not the dangers of romance because it was too close to his heart. He was a newlywed so it could not be openly exposed. He must not have been comfortable with it. Eckstein talks about how marriage is not the perfect fantasy that many people wished it to be so. The man and woman in the story “The Birthmark” were supposed to love each other for who they are but Aylmer looks to science to better his relationship and love for Georgiana. Eckstein states that, “it is a social institution subject to gender codes which sexually divide labor in order to propagate the myths or science and romance.” Marriage is not what many people believe it to be. It takes hard work and understanding. When I came home
I saw a dog He looked pretty sad Maybe because he was under a log It was extremely big I was unable to lift it Then came alone a pig The pig was a mighty one He was big and strong He might’ve been Hercules son The big pig lifted the piece of wood He was the only one that could do it No one else thought he could After the pig saves the day Everyone cheers HOORRRAAYYY! In the story, "The Thing in the Forest”, there are two girls who go out to play into the woods with an innocent little girl following them. This story takes place during the 1940s during World War II. While they are on their adventure in the woods, they see a “thing” and then the little girl disappears. It is assumed that the little girl is eaten and that the two girls live with guilt for the rest of their lives. The “thing” symbolized being frightened. The two girls were just children so they were not as affected by the war as the adults were but they are scarred by the “thing” just as the adults are scarred by the war. They war affects the adults as they grow older and the “thing” will affect the girls as they grow into adults.
In the story, “The Birthmark” by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Aminadab is Aylmer’s assistant. He does not seem to have an important role in the story and he does not appear a lot. In the beginning of the story, it may seem as if Aminadab does not have opinions on many things and that he does whatever Aylmer says. After seeing how much trouble Aylmer goes through to remove the birthmark off Georgiana’s cheek, he say’s “If she were my wife, I'd never part with that birthmark". This quote is one of the only things he says in the story. One can infer that he knows something that Aylmer does not and that he is opinionated.
In the article regarding Aminadab’s name, it states that, “Aminadab is a symbol of an early authority which is now discredited; the priestcraft for which he stands is no longer significant.” I agree with this because Aylmer seemed to completely ignore Aminadab’s opinion about him removing his wife’s birthmark. It seemed that Aylmer though Aminadab’s opinion about it was completely irrelevant. In the article, it says that he name is “highly significant” and “the biblical Aminadab is a high priest and head of the family.” Being the head of a family has become out of the ordinary in today’s society because in some families, all are considered equal. Many years ago, this was considered normal and men loved their wives no matter how they appeared. The husband and wife loved each other unconditionally no matter what. By saying that he would not have changed the birthmark on her cheek, it shows that he still believed in the way, things were ran in a household many years ago. In the story, “Hills like White Elephants,” Ernest Hemingway is telling his story in a very ambiguous way. He is known for letting the reader analyze what the meaning of his stories are. Unless one is willing to read over this story, they might find it extremely hard to understand because of how vague the subjects are. One may not understand that this story is about abortion.
One way Ernest Hemingway’s use of ambiguity is shown is through his use of pronouns. He uses them throughout the story and barely gives people names. For example, he refers to people as “the man”, “the woman”, “the girl” and “the American”. Doing so allows the reader to feel as if Hemingway is not opening up to his readers. He is not giving them enough information to feel like they know the characters. Many authors give their characters names and go into much detail about their lives. It opens with both characters having a conversation about the girl, Jig, getting an abortion. This is how Hemingway differs from many other authors. He is known for letting his readers interpret and analyze his stories. Ernest Hemingway does not specify exactly where in Spain. He does not say why they are going to Barcelona. He wants the reader to understand why the couple is having this conversation, what it is going to lead to and the tone of the story. This story is open-ended and never actually says if she has an abortion or not. In my opinion, the theme of “The Metamorphosis” by Franz Kafka is transformation. Most of the main characters in the story have changed in one form or another. Gregor Samsa literally changed into a cockroach and his presence in his family’s life became irrelevant. He went from providing for his whole family and being taken for granted to becoming useless in their eyes.
Gregor’s sister, Grete Samsa, wen’t through the biggest transformation. She went from being an immature young lady to a woman with responsibilities. She began taking care of Gregor after his transformation because she felt sorry for him. Grete would try to figure out his preferences and make sure he was comfortable. Shortly afterwards, it became about having responsibility and superiority over her mother. She even began treating him differently and starting pushing food into his room. In the beginning, Gregor states that he and his sister have always remained close so it must have been difficult for her to accept the fact that her brother was gone for good. She accepted the fact that he would never change back into a human being. She says to her father, “He must go! That’s the only solution, Father.” It takes a very mature woman to admit something so life changing. The father also went through a great transformation. He went from being solely dependent on his son after his business failed to getting a job and providing for his family. He started to dress and act more professionally. Some may disagree but I believe that transformation is the most important theme in “The Metamorphosis” by Franz Kafka because most of the main characters experienced it. In my opinion, the novella, “The Metamorphosis” by Franz Kafka was a story that had an extremely deep meaning because of how the main characters transformed. Gregor Samsa was a nice man who worked to take care of his entire family and tried to pay off their debts. After he mysteriously turns in a bug, he cannot do anything for the family and he just brings shame. In the story, it says, “One morning, upon awakening from agitated dreams, Gregor Samsa found himself, in his bed, transformed into a monstrous vermin.” That quote is stated in the beginning of the story. It foreshadows the way Gregor is going to been seen and treated throughout the story. Even though this awful thing has happened to him, he is still worried about going to work and taking care of his family. Overtime, he became a burden on the family and became useless.
Being an insect forced him to reflect back on the way he lived his life. It also forced his parents and his sister to better themselves in aspects of their lives. His parents had become too dependent on him and could not really stand on their own two feet but because of Gregors transformation, his father was forced to get a job. After his father got the job, he regains a sense of authority. Over the course of the story, Grete slowly goes through her own metamorphosis as well. She becomes a woman. When her brother transforms into a bug, Grete becomes his caretaker. After a while, she starts to stop feeling sorry for him. She begins to think of it has her adult responsibility. Grete gets a job and tries to support her family financially. I think that he metamorphosis of Gregor Samsa, contributed to the metamorphosis of the other characters in a positive way. Many people do not understand the deeper meaning behind him turning into an insect. |
